Top winter hair care tips

As the cold weather hits, it can take a toll on our locks. From wind-swept hair to frazzled ends, there’s so much to contend with at this time of year. Like your skin, hair needs some TLC to keep it looking and feeling healthy.

Follow these 5 winter hair care tips to get your locks back on track, whatever the weather.

REPLENISH HAIR MOISTURE

While Christmas hairstyles add glamour to the festive season, they can leave your tresses in need of a moisture boost. Look for luxurious products that hydrate and condition your hair while providing additional protection. You can also use leave-in conditioners after washing your hair to give it a lift, especially if you have thick locks.

CONTROL THE FRIZZ

Harsh winter elements and drier air can result in brittle, frizzy hair that’s hard to tackle, especially when facing cold winds and taking regular steamy showers that zap moisture. Hot water can break protein bonds in the strands and damage cuticles, so opting for lukewarm showers is better. If you’re wearing a hat outside to keep warm, wear one that’s loose in style with a silk or satin lining to help hair breathe.

TRY HAIR MASKS

Hair masks are a great way to nourish your hair. These deep conditioning treatments have a high concentration of ingredients, adding moisture to your hair while helping with conditions like dandruff. Masks are particularly beneficial for those with dry, damaged and frizzy hair this season, strengthening your strands while improving your scalp’s health too. Add masking to your weekly routine to really see a difference and make hair more manageable.

LOOK AFTER YOUR LOCKS AT NIGHT

While we often think about how to protect our hair during the day, don’t forget about a nightly regime too. Silk pillowcases are kinder to hair, but you can also pin your hair back with a soft protective tie to keep it in place while you sleep. If you plan to shower in the morning, consider a lightweight oil for the ends (like Argan oil) to help restore their condition. You could also use a humidifier in your bedroom to re-hydrate the air and replenish luscious locks.

TAKE A TRIP TO YOUR HAIR SALON

Heading to a salon for a trim is the perfect way to remove split ends and stop breakages. It can also encourage new hair growth, which will bring more healthy strands through to improve how your mane feels. Most salons recommend a visit every six to eight weeks to keep your locks looking fresh.
