The causes of hair damage

Hair is often something many people put time and money towards looking good, but it’s also easy to damage your locks without the right care and attention. Improper techniques or harsh chemicals can even lead to personal injuries, such as scalp burns.

Hair damage can show itself in various ways, from frazzled textures to patchy colour. To help you avoid hair disasters, here are some of the most common hair damage causes and how to treat them.

WHAT CAUSES HAIR DAMAGE?

There are usually three leading causes of hair damage – heat, chemicals and misuse of styling equipment.

Heat can damage hair when styling tools like straighteners and curlers cause dryness, hair breakages and split ends. Overuse and a lack of protection before applying the heat are often the main culprits.

Chemicals found in dyes, bleach and other treatments can also cause issues. Signs of chemical hair damage include dry lengths, changes in thickness and hair strands that have a slimy or gummy feel when wet. There may also be textural inconsistencies if your hair has been over-processed.

Finally, mechanical hair damage results from improper styling techniques, such as harsh brushing. You can spot this issue if the damage doesn’t just affect the ends, with frizzy hair seen right up to the cuticles.

CAN HAIR TREATMENTS HELP REPAIR DAMAGE?

If treatments and heat have caused split ends, the best course of action is a trip to the hair salon for a trim, removing the issue at the source. You can then apply preventative measures to stop the problem from occurring again. This includes using good quality heat protection sprays and avoiding overuse of styling equipment.

You can boost the health of your hair with some hydrating treatments, including nourishing serums, conditioners and masks from reputable brands that add moisture back into dry locks. You can also improve the condition of your hair with some simple changes, such as using silk pillows and microfibre hair towels that are softer and less harsh on your tresses.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF A HAIRDRESSER HAS RUINED YOUR HAIR?

Do you think a hairdresser has ruined your hair? This may have occurred after bleach was used or you had treatments without a patch test. Improper techniques may also have been applied without the right hair protection or consent. If you think a salon has caused your hair damage, you may have a claim.

Even if you’ve signed a waiver, if the treatment resulted in significant discomfort, distress and further costs to correct the damage, it’s important to seek professional advice about whether you’re entitled to compensation.
